Duo Envol

Music for Flute and Cello

Featuring Melanie Chirignan on flute, and Laura Melnicoff on cello, Duo Envol performs music that is anchored by the natural world, creativity, and joy. “Envol” is French for “flight” and “soaring,” and we invite you to join us on our travels.

Two women, one playing the cello and the other playing the flute, are facing each other indoors with a plant in the background.

Snowmelt was born as the weather turned from interminable winter to the first signs of spring. First came a tongue drum, then alto flute and cello, then piano, and then prepared piano. This unlikely gang of instruments turned out to have all kinds of sound overlaps, and this piece came out.

Recorded at the home studio of Melanie Huovinen, and recorded and mixed at the Looking Glass Arts Neighborhood Recording Residency. Audio engineers were Chris Brant, Jordan Dales, and assistant Abbie Martin.

Laura commissioned Trichotillomania from composer Abby Harris in 2024 as part of a Seed Money Grant from the New York Women Composers. This piece incorporates a huge range of extended techniques on flute and cello, which capture hair-pulling anxiety. This recording is from the premiere at Union College in Schenectady, NY, in 2025.

With new animation by Tiny Planet Productions, Cumulus Reverie was composed by Philip Spaeth in 2019 for flute and cello. This work is part of our workshop that explores music and its connection to visual media. Click here for more information and to book this workshop!
